Karva Chauth 2024

According to ancient stories, there was a woman named Karva who lived with her husband. One day, her husband was bathing in a river. While he was in the water, a crocodile appeared and grabbed his leg. Her husband called out to Karva for help. Hearing his voice, Karva quickly ran to the riverbank. She saw the crocodile dragging her husband towards the underworld with its teeth gripping his leg. Using a thread, Karva tied up the crocodile and pleaded with Lord Yama, the god of death, to save her husband.

Karva begged Yama to return her husband and punish the crocodile. Yama replied, “The crocodile’s life is not over yet, so I cannot send it to the underworld now.” Karva then said, “If you don’t help save my husband, I will curse you.”

Seeing Karva’s courage, Yama became afraid. He blessed her husband with a long life and sent the crocodile to the underworld. He also told Karva, “Any woman who fasts on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik, listens to or reads your story, I will personally protect her husband.”

The tale of Veeravati is most popular and can be found in Karwa Chauth book as well as all over the internet nowadays.  A long time ago, there was a very beautiful princess named Veeravati, who was married to a rich and strong king. When the day of Karwa Chauth came, she went to her parents’ house to celebrate.

Veeravati was very devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, so she decided to do the Karwa Chauth fast.

She woke up at sunrise and started her fast with prayers and worship. She didn’t eat all day, which made her very weak, and she eventually fainted.

According to the Karwa Chauth katha tradition, women could only eat after seeing the moon.

Her brothers loved her and couldn’t see her suffer, so they made a fake moon by lighting a lamp on a hill. They told Veeravati to look at it and break her fast.

Because she broke the fast early, she soon got the news that her husband had suddenly died. As she cried on her way back to the kingdom, she saw Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

She prayed to them to forgive her and bring her husband back to life. Shiva and Parvati agreed. With their blessings, her husband came back to life, but he was very sick and unconscious. His body was covered with sharp needles.

Veeravati worked hard and removed one needle each day. After a year, only one needle was left. Veeravati went to the market to buy items for the Karwa Chauth puja.

While she was away, a maid removed the last needle, and the king woke up. He thought the maid was the queen and made Veeravati his servant.

Veeravati faithfully served her husband as a maid for the whole year. When the next Karwa Chauth arrived, she got ready for the fast. She placed two dolls near the altar and sang a song, “Roli became Goli, and Goli became Roli,” which meant the queen had become a maid, and the maid had become the queen. The king asked her what the song meant. Veeravati told him everything that had happened.

The king admired her patience, faith, and devotion. Her strong belief in Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati was tested, and she passed.

Because of her devotion, she received many blessings. In the end, Veeravati and her husband lived happily with good health, wealth, and happiness, thanks to Shiva and Parvati’s blessings. This is also known as the famous Karva Chauth punjabi katha.
