When Mewar was under attack by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, Rani Karnavati, in a desperate situation, sent a Rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun seeking his help. Touched by her gesture, Humayun immediately marched his army to her aid.

In another ancient legend, the river goddess Yamuna tied a Rakhi to Yama, the god of death.
