History Behind Aadi Perukku Celebration – Aadi Perukku 2024 According to legends it is said that once the River Ganga asked Lord Krishna for advice on how to cleanse herself from the sins absorbed from people bathing in her waters. To this Lord Krishna suggested that she should merge with the Kaveri River to purify herself. With the power from Lord Krishna to absolve sins, the Kaveri River was overjoyed and surged to visit the holy sites where Lord Vishnu resides along her banks. She visited significant locations such as Srirangapatna, Shivanasamudra, and Srirangam to pay homage to Lord Ranganatha. This event is celebrated as the Aadi Perukku festival. Additionally, during the month of Aadi, the southwest monsoon strengthens, causing the Kaveri River to swell with fresh floodwaters. This increase in water flow is also commemorated as Aadi Perukku. Importance of Aadi Perukku Aadi is a special month for religious practices, especially for worshiping Goddess Shakti (Mother Nature). This festival is for honoring water and natural forces. People pray and perform rituals to please the powerful goddesses and seek their protection from any negative influences that are often linked with this month. As the water levels rise during Aadi, it becomes a good time for sowing and planting crops. Aadi Perukku is celebrated to show respect and gratitude to Mother Nature, rivers, and other water bodies. People in Tamilnadu greet one another with Aadi Perukku wishes and observe puja on the banks of the river Cauvery and other major rivers in Tamil Nadu. Special delicacies (Aadi Perukku thali) are prepared on this day, and relatives and friends join the family for the feast. Various rice dishes, including the popular ‘chithranam,’ are made. Many families enjoy a picnic by the riverbanks, making it a significant event in some Tamil Nadu districts.
